Although stoat activity has dropped for the winter period, we are more vigilant than ever with a huge increase in trap checks.
We removed 120 stoats, a slight drop on the same month in 2023. We also saw a decrease in the number of stoat sightings, which could be a reflection of the shrinking population. Despite this, we are more watchful than ever with 3,177 more trap checks in December 2024 than 2023.
Following on from last month (November 2024) North-West Mainland continues to catch the most stoats on the island. People had the sharpest eyes in East-Mainland, Burray, and South Ronaldsay, with 7 reported stoat sightings. The same area also deployed the most amount of new traps in the month.
Thanks to the incredible effort from the community, our volunteers, and project team, we are still on-track to achieve total eradication by 2030.
